The Rai Bahadur Gujar Mal Modi Foundation endeavours to meet its objectives
by focussing on the following audiences:
Modicare
Distributors
Modicare has over half a million distributors across
India. The aim is to spread AIDS awareness among this large community
and develop volunteers from among them, to take this message forward.
In all the Modicare officees spread across the country, an AIDS awareness
week is fixed to promote awareness and educate consultants.
Industrial
Workers
To spread HIV
awareness at the work place and conduct sessions with the employess. The
foundation also looks at developing HIV policy.
This section of society is being addressed with the purpose of promoting
AIDS awareness within the business agenda. The objective is to develop
an understanding of how AIDS is affecting businesses; and both directly
and indirectly impacts productivity, manpower, income levels etc. The
awareness programme highlights the benefits of investing in awareness
costs now, rather than bearing heavy costs in the future.
Schools
The foundation is conducting workshops in schools to
spread AIDS awareness at the adosolescent level. RBGM is presently conducting
workshops in ten government schools and two public schools targeting the
students of classes IX and XI.
Very soon children will become the primary targets of this epidemic. Due
to the social conditions prevalent in our society, there is a taboo about
discussing issues related to sex and sexual health. Parents and teachers
are not comfortable discussing these issues. As a result children grow
up groping in the dark, surrounded by myths, attempting to satisfy their
curiosity from incorrect sources and learning only through mistakes. Are
we as a nation prepared to bear the costs of these mistakes? If not, it's
time to introduce these topics within the curriculum, so as to facilitate
awareness, healthy growing and learning.
Sex
Workers
The foundation promotes health facilities for sex workers in G.B. Road,
Delhi. The main aim is to empower them, and promote condom usage and reduce
sexually transmitted diseases.
Sex workers who are the most vulnerable
to the infection are the stigmatised section of society. These workers
are a powerful force within themselves and need to be empowered. There
needs to be active participation at all levels, from the individual to
business houses, the NGO sector and the government, to promote awareness
of better living conditions and health programmes for them.
Slums
The foundation's programmes
in these areas are centred around creating awareness about AIDS.
